RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME
Restless
leg syndrome (RLS) is an idiopathic condition resulting in a sensation of
creeping and crawling dysesthesia within the legs, leading to involuntary
movements during sleep. Often the condition is brought to attention because
of multiple bruises sustained by
the sleep partner. The condition
can be familial and is exacerbated by sleep deprivation, caffeine, and pregnancy. There is also an association with
uremia, iron deficiency, and peripheral neuropathy.
There is
no specific diagnostic test for this disorder. Treatment is a dopamine agonist such as pramipexole or ropinirole, although some
patients may need levodopa/carbidopa. Other therapies are narcotics and benzodiazepines.
